The Russian biathlon relay team was disqualified after winning the silver medal in the Youth Olympic Games on Thursday due to illegal lane crossing.
Team member Uliana Kaysheva accidentally took the route for a penalty loop route rather than the changeover lane, and broke the rules by crossing back. The French team lodged a protest with the adjudicators, and they were subsequently bumped up to the bronze.
Germany took the gold, with the Norwegians winning the silver.
It denied Kaysheva a third medal at the Games after she won the individual 7.5 km pursuit and bronze in the sprint last week.
The first-ever Winter Youth Olympic Games opened last Friday in Innsbruck, bringing together a thousand 14- to 18-year-old athletes from 70 nations to the Tyrolean capital.
The competition, which runs through January 22, follows the inaugural Summer Youth Games in Singapore in 2010, and medals are up for grabs in seven sports: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, figure skating and alpine skiing.
