Russian Premier League side Volga Nizhny Novgorod have taken a former Portugal under-21 winger on trial, the club said Friday.
Ivanildo Cassama, who now plays international football for Guinea-Bissau, is expected to feature in Volga’s friendly match Friday in Cyprus against Czech side Viktoria Plzen, who appeared in the Champions League group stage this season.
“A winger has arrived on trial who has played for the Portuguese youth team and now appears under the flag of Guinea Bissau. The hero’s name is Ivanildo,” the club said on its official Twitter page.
Ivanildo started his career at Porto, making 22 appearances in two seasons before a series of loan spells at first- and second-tier Portuguese clubs. He currently plays for Olhanense, who are seventh in the Portuguese top flight.
Volga are 14th of 16 teams in their first season in the Russian Premier League, one point above the automatic relegation places, but would face a relegation playoff if they finish the season in their current position.
