Two teenage girls died after jumping from a high-rise apartment building in Lobnya, a satellite city of Moscow, a spokeswoman for the regional investigation department said.

Two best friends, Yelizaveta Petsylya and Anastasia Korolyova, were holding hands when they jumped from the roof a 14-storey building at about 21.30 Moscow time [17:30 GMT] on Tuesday. They were 12 or 14 years of age, according to various sources.

On Monday evening Korolyova wrote in social networking account: “I hate being asked: “what if your friends decide to jump from the ninth floor? Will you jump too?” Yeah, I will, how can I live without my friends?”

“In order to establish all causes and circumstances have launched a criminal case… on suspicion they were incited to commit suicide,” spokeswoman Irina Gumennaya said.

A Moscow Region police source said the girls had left suicide notes, but refused to disclose the content.
