German President Christian Wulff resigned on Friday amid a scandal over a home loan he received when he was the head of Lower Saxony state.
“The developments of the past days and weeks have shown that (the German people's) trust and therefore confidence in my ability to serve have been seriously damaged," Wulff said in his resignation announcement. "For this reason, it is no longer possible for me to continue in my role as president."
The unprecedented resignation follows allegations that Wulff abused the public trust for financial gain. Yesterday the prosecutor's office in Hanover asked the Bundestag to suspend Wulff's immunity from prosecution as it investigates the circumstances surrounding the 500,000-euro home loan.
According to recent opinion polls, about 84 percent of Germans do not believe the president is being honest.
