At least 38 were killed in a riot at a prison on the outskirts of Mexico’s northern city of Monterrey on Sunday, the BBC reported.
A fight broke out between inmates from two separate wings of the Apodaca prison in the early hours of Sunday morning after they either bribed or forced guards to open the doors, security officials said.
The prisoners set alight mattresses and other flammable objects, said Jorge Domene, a security spokesman for the state of Nuevo Leon.
Domene said it was unclear what caused the fight but did not rule out the possibility that it could have been a confrontation between rival gangs.
The prison houses more than 3,000 inmates.
Last month, a fight between rival gangs in another prison in the north of the country left 31 inmates dead.
