At least 60 people were killed and over 200 were injured on Thursday in series of blasts that ripped through areas near to Iraqi capital of Baghdad, Al Arabiya reported citing security officials.

The blasts which targeted mostly security forces, rocked Balad, a town north of Baghdad, as well as Baghdad districts of Karrada, Mansour, Diyala and Shia areas of Kadhimiya and Doura, Al Arabiya said.

According to the police officials, over 60 people are reported to be killed and at least 200 were injured in the blasts.

Though none of militant groups have yet to claim responsibility for the attacks, Al-Qaeda is believed to be behind the blasts.

In January Al-Qaeda’s leading group, the Islamic State of Iraq, claimed responsibility for attacks on Shiite pilgrims, saying it would continue to rock the country and “spill rivers of their blood.”

Last week on Sunday 18 people were reported to have been killed near the police academy in Baghdad.

Hundreds have been killed in Iraqi blasts since the U.S. troops withdrew from the country on December 18.
