The construction of the cable-stayed bridge across the Eastern Bosphorus Strait toward Russky Island is part of the preparations for the APEC 2012 Summit in Vladivostok.
The summit of the APEC countries on September 8-9, 2012, in Vladivostok will be the first time it has been held in Russia. Approximately 600 billion rubles ($20.5 bln) are being spent on preparations for the summit: over 50 buildings are going up and the utility grid is being overhauled.
The overall length of the sections required to make the central channel span is 948 meters. Preparations are currently in full swing to lift panels 47-48 out of the water on the side of the Nazimov Peninsula and panels 45-46 from the side of Russky Island.
Along with the construction of the main metal support beams, the installation of the cable system will continue: from both sides of the strait, there will be 72 pairs of cables up to 531 meters in length.
The height of the M6 pylon on the Nazimov Peninsula will be 320 meters, the main bridge support legs on Russky Island will be 311 meters above sea level.
When it opens in 2012, it will be the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world, its central span measuring 1,104 meters, and second in the world in terms of the height of its pylons, at 320 meters (the Millau Viaduct in France is 336 meters tall)
The decision to build a bridge to Russky Island was made as far back as the early 1900s. The first draft was completed in 1939 and the second in the 1960s, but neither of these projects ever got off the ground.
