The pilot of the Su-30 fighter jet that crashed on Tuesday in Russia’s Far East has been admitted to hospital with multiple rib fractures, a local doctor said on Wednesday.

The pilot, Lieutenant-Colonel Valery Kirillin, and the other crew member ejected shortly before the aircraft crashed on Tuesday 130 km northeast of Komsomolsk-on-Amur during a test flight.

Kirillin is in a satisfactory condition, the doctor said. The other crew member was not hurt, he said.

The crashed aircraft belonged to the Komsomolsk-on-Amur factory where Su-30s are manufactured. A criminal case has been launched over breaches of flight security arrangements. In line with Russian laws, the maximum punishment for this offence is seven years in prison.

The Su-30, a multirole combat aircraft, is operated by Algeria, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Uganda, Venezuela and Vietnam.
