The Central Department Store (TsUM) opened in Moscow 90 years ago, on March 10, 1922. The building in which it is housed today was built in 1908 by well known architect Roman Klein and is located in the heart of the capital near the Bolshoi Theater.
Before the Russian Revolution, this was the location of the Muir and Mirrielees Trade Company, which was known throughout Russia and was founded in the mid-19th century by Scottish traders and Andrew Muir and Archibald Mirrielees. After 1917, their company was nationalized.
Only five years later, the doors of TsUM opened to the public.
