WORLD

*Russia on Monday lashed out at the demands for regime change in Syria, support for the opposition, and calls for outside intervention, which only intensify the conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the UN.

*China will conduct its fifth Arctic expedition between July and September via the Northeast Passage, the country's first attempt through the shipping route also known as the Northern Sea Route, Xinhua reported.

*Parliamentary elections in the former Georgian republic of Abkhazia were illegitimate, the monitoring co-rapporteurs for Georgia of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) said.

*Two Russian Emergencies Ministry planes with humanitarian aid for conflict-torn Syria landed in Damascus, the ministry’s press service said.

*The U.S. has said it is willing to disclose classified information to Russia on the missile defense shield to be deployed in Europe, a move that a military analyst said could solve the impasse over the American program.

*The Taliban have promised the relatives of those civilians killed by an American soldier in a shooting spree on Sunday that they will carry out revenge attacks, the group said on the Voice of Jihad website.

*Russian Justice Initiative (RJI), Russia’s largest foreign non-governmental organization providing legal assistance to Russians in the European Court of Human Rights, was excluded from the list of authorized NGOs, the Kommersant daily said.

*About 62,000 people were diagnosed with HIV in Russia in 2011, which is five percent more than in the previous year, the country’s chief sanitary doctor said.

BUSINESS

*Russia's leading power engineering company Power Machines saw its 2011 net profit jump 26.4 percent year-on-year to $323.044 million to IFRS, the company said in a statement.
