Artwork from the St. Petersburg-based Russian Museum will go online as part of the Google Art Project in April, a curator said on Tuesday.
“Google Art will get the Russian Museum’s landmark artwork, including many of our icons,” Olga Babina told RIA Novosti. The list also includes the epic oil painting “The Last Day of Pompeii” by Karl Brullov, a staple of Russian fine art from the 1830s.
In total, about 50 items from the Russian Museum’s collection were scanned in high resolution to appear in Google Art Project, an online depository of visual arts from the world’s leading museums. The collection will initially be only available with English commentary, Babina said.
Moscow’s Pushkin Museum will also feature in the Google project starting next month, Babina said. She did not elaborate.
Google Art Project hosts more than 1,000 artworks from 17 of the world’s top museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Britain, Palace of Versailles, Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and Russia’s Tretyakov Gallery and The Hermitage Museum.
