Russia will remove the last of Ukraine's highly enriched uranium by Sunday, Russian nuclear chief Sergei Kiriyenko said on Friday.

Russia will remove the last of Ukraine's highly enriched uranium by Sunday, Russian nuclear chief Sergei Kiriyenko said on Friday.

The comments come after 109 kilograms of highly enriched uranium were shipped to Russia from a Kharkiv research insitute.

"On Sunday, the last batch from the Kiev Institute of Nuclear Research will arrive [in Russia]," Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's state nuclear agency Rosatom, told reporters in Moscow. The batch is estimated to be about 20 kilograms.

"This will do away with any fears that highly enriched uranium could have fallen into the wrong hands in Ukraine," Kiriyenko said.

Under a deal with the United States and Russia, Ukraine removed all nuclear weapons from its territory by 1996. Some 1,900 warheads were transferred to Russia in return for nuclear reactor fuel.
