Russian driver Vitaly Petrov says he's "reasonably pleased" with Friday's practice sessions for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Petrov, who last week retired from the season-opening Australian Grand Prix along with teammate Heikki Kovalainen due to technical issues with his Caterham car, was 19th and 21st in Friday's two sessions.

"We worked through the normal Friday runplans and for me it was a pretty good day," Petrov said in comments to the Caterham website.

"The grip levels this morning were not good, but I think that was the same for most of the teams. ... We have a couple of areas to focus on tonight, particularly looking at maximizing traction, but I'm reasonably pleased with where we have ended up."

In Malaysia, Caterham plan to fit the cars with the KERS, a system that recovers energy generated under breaking and throws it back into acceleration, for the first time this season.

The second race on the F1 calendar is a homecoming for Caterham, which is Malaysian-owned.

"First of all it is just great to be back on track in Sepang, in our home country," Caterham CEO Riad Asmat said. "We have had a tremendous welcome here and, for me, it is good to feel the heat of home."

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was quickest around the Sepang International Circuit in both practice sessions, with reigning champion Sebastian Vettel trailing in the first and Michael Schumacher in the second.

Jensen Button, the man who beat all three to first place in Melbourne, was third fastest in the second session.
