Moscow Region Governor Boris Gromov said on Friday he will resign after his term of office expires in May after 12 years in the post.

“The term of my office expires in May. I have been heading the Moscow Region for 12 years now and I believe this is enough,” Gromov said.

The press service of the Moscow Region administration said Gromov would announce his future plans only after he completes his work in the current post.

Gromov, 68, began his political career in 1996 as a deputy with Russia’s lower house of the parliament, the State Duma, and was elected the governor of the Moscow Region in 2000.

Before going into politics, Gromov made an outstanding career with Russian Military Forces and retired in 1994 in the rank of Colonel General. He served three times in Afghanistan during Soviet combat activities there and oversaw the withdrawal of the Soviet troops in 1989.
