An infantry battalion commander in Russia’s Far East was killed on Wednesday after he threw himself over a soldier to protect him when a grenade fell near him during a training exercise, Eastern Military District spokesman Alexander Gordeyev said .
“An emergency situation occurred during a grenade throwing exercise . A grenade…bounced off the trench wall. The battalion commander immediately reacted to the situation and covered the conscript soldier with his body,” Gordeyev said.
The injured officer was taken to a military hospital in Belogorsk but died one and a half hours after.
