Dereck Chisora could fight Alexander Povetkin in the fall if the Briton gets a license to box, the Russian's promotor said Saturday.
Chisora is in the process of appealing a March 14 decision by the British Boxing Board of Control to strip him of his license after a brawl with compatriot David Haye in Germany last month.
WBA title holder Povetkin's promoter Vlad Hrunov said he was in negotiations with Chisora's team to bring them together later this year.
"We're in talks, and I can say now that this fight could happen in the fall," Hrunov said. "The only problem is that Dereck doesn't have a license."
Chisora, currently in Moscow to watch Wednesday's WBA interim cruiserweight bout between Denis Lebedev and challenger Shawn Cox, told RIA Novosti that he was confident of regaining his license.
He also said that he could fight under a Russian boxing license "if they'll give me one."
Igor Mazurov, the general secretary of the Russian Professional Boxing Federation, told RIA Novosti that the body is within its rights to issue licenses to whomever it likes, regardless of citizenship.
The British Boxing Board of Control revoked Chisora's license indefinitely after ruling that he "is not a fit and proper person to hold a license."
Chisora got into a brawl with Haye in Munich on February 19 after losing on points to Vitali Klitschko. He had also slapped the Ukrainian at the weigh-in and spat water in the face of Wladimir Klitschko in the ring before the bout.
"Everyone of you here would agree that [Chisora's] fight against Vitali was competitive, and if we talk about a possible bout between Dereck Chisora and Alexander Povetkin, then this should also be of great interest," Hrunov said.
Povetkin is a 24-0 fighter who is carving out a path to a shot at one of the Klitschkos. The Russian is rumored to be sizing up a July 14 title defense against U.S. veteran heavyweight Hasim Rahman.
