At least 30 servicemen of Pakistani Armed Forces have been killed after an avalanche hit their camp in a remote area in the country's north on the border with India, Iranian Press TV channel reported on Saturday.
The incident occurred Saturday morning in the Karakoram range of Himalayas, Pakistan army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told the channel.
"More than 100 soldiers of Northern Light Infantry including a colonel were trapped when the avalanche hit a military camp," Abbas said, adding that the rescue operation was underway.
Karakoram in the northern part of Kashmir is an area of dispute between Pakistan and India, this is why several thousand troops from both the Pakistani and the Indian side are based in there.
Avalanches in the Himalaya Mountains are not uncommon. The victims of avalanches in the Himalayas are usually the foreign climbers who want to reach a peak of the highest mountain of Earth.
