Greek seamen begin a 48-hour strike on Tuesday leaving all ships and ferries anchored at ports and disrupting plans of thousands of people ahead of Orthodox Easter holidays this week, Greek media reported.

The Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) earlier demanded from the country’s authorities that seamen’s pensions should not be reduced during the financial crisis in the country, but on the contrary should be raised.

The demand was not met and the PNO decided to go with the strike, which is also expected to deliver a major blow both to the domestic and foreign tourism.

Two months ago the Greek parliament approved a deeply unpopular austerity bill envisaging belt-tightening, wage and pension cuts. The move was met by mass protests across the country.
