Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday that the Syrian government had declared a ceasefire with rebel forces starting from Thursday morning.
“The Syrian government has declared a ceasefire starting from 6 a.m. on April 12. Now, it’s up to the armed opposition [to do the same] – this is a condition stipulated by [UN and Arab League] envoy Kofi Annan,” Gatilov wrote, quoting no one.
The official Syrian SANA news agency quoted a source in the Syrian Defense Ministry on Wednesday as saying that “after our armed forces have implemented their tasks successfully in the fight against criminal acts by armed terrorist groups, extending state authority over [Syrian] territory, the decision has been made to stop these functions with effect from Thursday morning, 12/04/2012.”
It was not possible to verify SANA’s report.
