A Chechen businessman was shot dead in his car in central Moscow on Thursday afternoon in what appeared to be a contract killing, police said.
The body of a 53-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was found in a parked Toyota Land Cruiser in downtown Moscow on Thursday afternoon. A 25-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car also sustained a head wound but survived and was sent to hospital, police said.
A spokeswoman for the Russian investigative committee, Viktoria Tsyplenkova, said the man had been identified as Ilgar Aliyev. Earlier police reports said it was Ilgar Ogly Dzhabrailov, who is general director of the Mega Kolor company.
“Operatives believe the businessman was being followed and the perpetrators tailed him by car, looking for a good moment to shoot,” police said.
He said when the cars stopped at a traffic light, a man dressed in black ran up to the businessman’s car and shot him through the window. The man died on the spot.
The Moscow police department confirmed the incident.
Police said it was looking for several men from the Caucasus region.
“Witnesses said there were several perpatrators. They all appeared to be ethnic Caucasians,” police said.
