Three militants were killed on Tuesday night in Khasavyurt, a city in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the republic’s interior ministry said on Wednesday.
Three people travelling in a car opened fire at law enforcers, who ordered them to stop for a security check.
“The three people in the car were killed, there were no casualties among law-enforcers,” the spokesman said.
The identities of the gunmen are yet to be established.
The republic’s Investigation Department said a pistol and several grenades were found in the car.
More than a decade after the end of a war against separatists in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants in other regions in the area besides Chechnya, including Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, Dagestan, and North Ossetia. Frequent attacks are staged on security forces, police and civilians.
