Eight people have been killed in a series of blasts that hit an eastern Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk on Friday, The Izvestia v Ukraine daily reported on Monday quoting an anonymous hospital official as saying.

“Eight people have died…We were forbidden to say that somebody had died,” the source in the local hospital told the daily on the condition of anonymity.

A series of explosions rocked Dnepropetrovsk on April 27, injuring 30 people, including eleven teenagers, according to official information.

Regional officials however dismissed the media reports.

“I’ve just contacted the regional healthcare body…There are 14 injured remain in hospitals,” Anna Karas, a spokeswoman for the regional administration told RIA Novosti, adding that none of the people were in critical condition.

Among the versions of the attacks, mulled by the Ukrainian media, are attempts to undermine the country’s image ahead of the Euro-2012 championship that starts on June 8 as well as government-backed plans to impose an emergency situation in the country and restrict people’s rights.

Ukrainian Security Service released on Sunday identikit images of three men thought to have been involved in Friday's attacks.
