A famous painting by Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch, The Scream, has been auctioned off at Sotheby’s for record $119,992,500.
The 1895 artwork showing a man holding his head and screaming under a red sky is one of the most recognizable images in the world. The name of the painting’s buyer was not announced.
The previous record for a painting sold at an auction belonged to Picasso’s ‘Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,’ which was hammered off at Christie’s in 2010 for $106.5 million.
Proceeds from the sale of ‘The Scream’ will be used for the establishment of a museum, art center and a hotel in Norway.
