Five Albanians have been arrested in southern Serbia on suspicion of committing war crimes during a rebellion in the troubled Presevo valley in 2001, a prosecutor said on Friday.

Serbian War Crime Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic could not give any further details.

The arrests were made in the southern town of Bujanovac and in the villages of Veliki Trnovac and Breznica, Serbian news website B92 reported.

Unconfirmed reports say a translator from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was among those arrested.

Presevo valley, a mainly-Albanian area along the boundary with Kosovo, was part of a demiliatrized zone set up by NATO in the wake of the conflict there.

Between 1999 and 2001, it was at the center of fighting between the Serb authorities and Albanian guerrillas, who launched attacks to control the territory.
