Russian second-tier side FC Mordovia Saransk won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in its history on Tuesday after a 2-0 win over Shinnik Yaroslavl.

Saransk, in central Russia, is a possible host city for the 2018 World Cup.

The win came courtesy of a goal in each half from the division's leading scorer Ruslan Mukhametshin, who took his tally to 31 goals in 49 matches this season.

The result puts Mordovia on an uncatchable 100 points from 51 games, with one remaining.

Nizhny Novgorod and Alania Vladikavkaz are joint second on 93 points and both have two games left. They will fight it out for the one remaining automatic promotion place.

Whoever comes third will join Shinnik in entering the promotion/relegation playoffs, where the two will play the fourth- and third-from-bottom in the Premier League for a place in the top division next season.

Mordovia were founded in 1961. Their previous best result came last season, when they finished sixth.
