The upcoming Beijing summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will approve the organization's midterm development strategy, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said on Wednesday, Xinhua reported .
The 12th SCO summit will be held in Beijing on June 6-7.
The objective is to build the SCO into a practical and highly effective platform for cooperation, Cheng said, adding that it will be the first plan for the SCO's future development.
It shows the determination of the member states for the SCO’s long-term development and their consensus on issues concerning the overall strategic situation, he said.
The summit will issue a declaration on promoting durable peace and common prosperity, and adopt some other documents on cooperation, Cheng said.
The summit will also review Afghanistan's application for observer status and Turkey's application for dialogue partner status, Cheng said.
The SCO is an intergovernmental international organization established on in June 2001 by Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Observer states include India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan, while its dialogue partners include Belarus and Sri Lanka.
