A doctor who delayed treating a Russian breakdance champion for a week after a road accident, leading to its infection with gangrene and subsequent amputation, has resigned, a hospital official said on Monday.

“It’s very difficult for a person to come to work under this pressure,” Sergey Ivlev said.

The doctor in question, Sergey Starikovsky, delayed the transfer of breakdance champ Yevgeny Smirnov, 25, after a road accident in the Black Sea resort of Lazarevskoye on April 30.

“When I came to visit him, the leg was a terrible sight: it was swollen, the wound was literally bubbling. That meant that he had already had gangrene. Yevgeny said that he could not endure the pain any more,” a friend said.

Smirnov’s friends insisted he be transferred to the regional center of Krasnodar, which has a bigger hospital than the one he was first taken to in Lazarevskoye. But Starikovsky refused to okay the transfer until Sochi Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov stepped in.

Ivlev also said Starikovsky would be able to return to work if he is cleared by a hospital probe into the incident.
