Svetlana Kuznetsova hopes to retain the services of new coach Hernan Gumy despite a heavy defeat to Sara Errani at the French Open on Sunday.
The Russian, a 2009 champion at Roland Garros, was routed in the first set but served for the second a 5-4 up before Errani broke back to seal a 6-0, 7-5 win to book her place in the quarterfinals.
Kuznetsova started working with Gumy, a former world No. 39, a week before the tournament and achieved a shock 6-1, 6-2 win over world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round.
“I hope that this tournament won’t be the last with him,” Kuznetsova said.
“Obviously, I need to sort out several areas of my game. It’s impossible to change a lot in your game when you’ve worked with a coach for just a week before Roland Garros.”
Gumy has previously coached Marat Safin, the last Russian man to be ranked No. 1.
