Germany defender Mats Hummels signed a four-year contract extension at Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, ending rumors of a transfer to Barcelona or Manchester United.

Hummels, who is part of Germany’s Euro 2012 squad, was a fixture in the Dortmund defense as they won the last two Bundesliga titles.

“Mats Hummels could have moved to almost any club in Europe, but he’s chosen Borussia Dortmund. It’s a superb story,” coach Jurgen Klopp said on the Dortmund website.

“Mats plays the game intelligently with regard to defensive one-on-ones and closing off space. I don’t know anyone on the continent who does that as well as he does.”

Hummels said his warm feelings for Dortmund were crucial to his decision.

“When the club came to me and asked if I wanted an extension, it was immediately clear to me that I want to stay part of this team that’s so successful and so much fun,” he said on the Dortmund website.

Hummels started his career at Bayern Munich, where he played just one senior game before being sent on loan in 2008 to Dortmund, where he signed in 2009.

He has scored one goal in 14 appearances for Germany.
