The plane was heading from Lagos to Abuja, the capital, when it went down about 3:30 p.m. local time, shortly after takeoff, authorities said. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, though an official from Nigeria's rescue agency and an aviation official said the cockpit recorder had been located and handed over to police.

The flight originally was reported to have been carrying 153 people, but the Civil Aviation Authority said later in a statement that 147 people were on board.

Local reports indicated that at least two buildings were severely damaged, one of them a church.

Officials have said there are many casualties, but so far no exact numbers are available.
