Reaching the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 will put smiles on the faces of Greeks dismayed by the country’s economic crisis, Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis has said.
Karagounis scored as Greece beat Russia 1-0 on Saturday, which, combined with the Czech Republic’s 1-0 win over Poland, was enough to send the Czechs and Greeks through from Group A at Russia’s expense.
“Especially now when our compatriots do not have the best of times, I believe this will put a smile on their faces,” Karagounis said.
“This I believe gives an additional value to qualifying for the next round.”
Greece’s opponent in the quarterfinal will be either Germany, Denmark or Portugal.
