Canadian left wing Trevor Gillies has joined KHL team Vityaz Chekhov from the NHL’s New York Islanders, the Russian team said Tuesday.

Vityaz did not specify the length of Gillies’ contract in a website statement announcing the signing.

Gillies played 56 NHL games for the Islanders over three seasons, scoring two goals and one assist. He also played one game for the Anaheim Ducks in the 2005-06 season.

Vityaz also announced that Canadian right wing and enforcer Jeremy Yablonski has extended his contract at the team.

Yablonski became notorious in the KHL last season for averaging more time per game in penalty minutes than he spent on the ice, with 174 penalty minutes in 16 matches.

He played one NHL game for the St. Louis Blues in the 2003-04 season, spending five minutes on the ice and picking up a major penalty.

Vityaz finished last in the KHL regular-season standings last season.
