England striker Wayne Rooney was delighted to score the winning goal in England’s 1-0 win against Ukraine, he has said.
Rooney’s header from point-blank range was his first goal at a major tournament since a four-goal haul at Euro 2004, and he was glad to end the dry spell, he said after Tuesday’s game.
“I'm delighted with the win and to score,” he said.
“It's great as I haven’t scored at a major tournament for a while and the whole team was fantastic and we defended really well in front of a difficult crowd, but we deserved to win.”
Rooney’s goal was his 30th for England in 76 international appearances.
England qualified as group winners and will now face Italy in the quarterfinals.
