Director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky says Santiago Calatrava’s visit and the exhibition of his work will play an enormously influential role in Russia.
“The exhibition can help Russian visitors develop a fine taste in architecture. Unfortunately, people from all social strata in Russia, regardless of their education, are lacking in this,” adds Piotrovsky.
Calatrava said at a press conference that he would be delighted to design a building or a bridge for St. Petersburg but that it would not be a simple task, since he believes it should not encroach on the historical center.
In addition to architecture and design, Calatrava has also worked in ceramics, which he considers to be the precursor to all construction work. The exhibition presents several enormous suspended eggs, built and hand-painted by Calatrava.
