Slovakian debutant Peter Sagan won the first stage of the Tour de France on Saturday but failed to take the yellow jersey from prologue winner Fabian Cancellara.
Sagan, of the Liquigas team, pipped Cancellara to the stage win in the Belgian town of Seraing, with Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen in third, although all were given the same time in the classification.
Cancellara retains the leader’s yellow jersey after winning Saturday’s prologue in Liege, with Britain’s Bradley Wiggins and France’s Sylvain Chavanel both seven seconds behind.
Sagan, riding in his first Tour, is 24 seconds down on the lead.
Swiss rider Cancellara also holds the lead in the points classification, while Denmark’s Michael Morkov takes the King of the Mountains’ polka dot jersey after coming out on top in a stage with five category four climbs.
Monday’s stage two is a 208-kilometer flat stage heading west across Belgium from Vise to Tournai, before the Tour enters France on Tuesday.
