A new bill toughening regulations for foreign-funded nonprofit organizations may be adopted in July and come into force in fall, a Kremlin source told RIA Novosti.
The bill, which grants the status of foreign agents to Russian nonprofits working in the political sphere that are funded from abroad and envisions administrative and criminal responsibility for noncompliance, was submitted to the lower house by a group of ruling United Russia party deputies on Friday.
The nonprofits would be included in a special register and will be subject to checks.
Russian business daily Kommersant reported on June 29 that representatives of the nonprofits say the authorities fear the import of an "Orange revolution-style” mood to Russia.
