About 7,000 people and 1,500 households have been affected by severe floods caused by heavy rains in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Gelendzhik.

An emergency situation has been imposed in Gelendzhik where five people have died after an electrical transformer fell on the ground. A total of 17 power stations have been temporarily shut down in the city, leaving about 20,000 people without electricity.

People are being evacuated from the most heavily affected cities, including Krymsk, Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik.

The death toll from massive flooding in Krasnodar region has risen to 87.

Krasnodar region’s governor, Alexander Tkachyov called the floods the worst in the country in the past 70 years.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry has dispatched a plane with rescuers onboard to the affected area.

Internet users who witnessed the floods said that neither authorities nor meteorologist had warned about the approaching heavy rains.
