Scottish striker Garry O’Connor has joined Russian second tier club FC Tomsk on a two-year contract, the team said Thursday.

The former Birmingham City forward became a free agent when he left Scottish team Hibernian last month after his contract expired.

“Experience 29-year-old Scottish forward Garry O’Connor became a Tom player today,” the Siberian club said in a website statement, adding that he would wear the number nine shirt.

“The contract with the forward is for a two-year period.”

The striker became the first British footballer to play in Russia in 2006 after joining Lokomotiv Moscow, but failed to hold down a first-team place during his 15-month spell with the Railwaymen.

O'Connor was sentenced to 200 hours community service in Edinburgh last month after he was found guilty of possessing cocaine and obstructing a police officer, soon after he was acquitted on unrelated charges of insurance fraud.

He earned 16 caps for Scotland between 2002 and 2009, scoring four goals.

Tomsk were relegated from the Russian Premier League last season after finishing 15th of 16 teams.

The last Scot to join a Siberian club was former Rangers player and Liverpool assistant coach Alex Miller, who was fired by Sibir Novosibirsk in April after a run of poor results in his nine games in charge.
