The website of Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin claims that Fabio Capello has been appointed Russia coach.

Capello was in Moscow on Thursday for talks about taking the job after he was named on the union's shortlist of 13 coaches, Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko told R-Sport.

The acting head of the Russian FA Nikita Simonyan dropped a big hint that Capello was the chosen candidate on Friday, shortly before apparent confirmation appeared on arshavin.eu.

"Fabio Capello has been appointed as the new head coach of the Russian national team," the website said. "We wish him success in his new position."

A source close to the talks told R-Sport last week that Capello was likely to have been offered a two-year contract, which would take him through the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Sports minister Mutko had earlier insisted other candidates were still in the frame, and that those coaches were due in Moscow for talks in the coming days.

Capello resigned after four years in charge of England in February in protest at interference in team affairs from the country's FA.

He has vast experience in the game, winning the Champions League and the Italian and Spanish titles in spells with AC Milan, Juventus, AS Roma and Real Madrid.
