Alexander Shulenin's header gave 10-man FC Volga a shock 1-0 win over Dynamo Moscow in their Russian Premier League opener on Saturday.

Shulenin's goal came on 69 minutes, the Russian rising at the back post to head Alexei Sapogov's cross under the bar.

The goal came 18 minutes after Volga midfielder Ilya Maksimov received a straight red card for a late lunge on Dynamo's Christian Noboa.

The teams canceled each other out in the first half, and it was only in the second that Dynamo, who finished fourth last season, started to really press.

Volga midfielder Andrei Karyaka threatened inside 10 minutes, sending a shot just past the right post.

Dynamo went close through long shots from Noboa on 35 minutes and 39 minutes. The first was saved by Volga goalkeeper Ilya Abaev and the second sailed wide.

After the break Dynamo goalkeeper Shunin stopped Shota Bibilov's effort from Karyaka's cross.

But then Dynamo seized the initiative and created several dangerous attacks in a row as Kevin Kuranyi, had a vicious shot saved by Abaev on 50 minutes.

Just a minute later Kuranyi headed over from Balazs Dzsudzsak's cross.

Dynamo ramped up the pressure after gaining a numerical advantage, but couldn't convert a glut of chances.

Kuranyi nearly went one on one against Abaev on 57 minutes, but was stopped by defender Andrei Buyvolov.

Two minutes later the German striker hit the bar, as Volga defense crumbled.

But it was the hosts who took the lead against the run of play.

They could have made it two 10 minutes from time, Shulenin chose to shoot rather than pass to unmarked Bosnian striker Mersudin Ahmetovic, and Shunin saved.

Kuranyi missed a glorious chance on 86 minutes, stretching to connect with an Alexander Kokorin cross, but he could only hit straight at Abaev from point-blank range.

Volga, who finished 14th last season, hung on through four minutes of injury time to seal a famous win.

In Saturday's earlier match, Seydou Doumbia's second-half strike secured a 1-0 victory for CSKA Moscow over FC Rostov.

In Friday's curtain-raiser, ten-man Lokomotiv Moscow clung on for a 3-2 win against Premier League debutants Mordovia Saransk.
