A cook sacked from a river cruise ship went on a stabbing rampage in St. Petersburg, attacking tourists at the pier, local news website Fontanka.ru said on Sunday.
The man shouted madly as he stabbed deliberately with two knives at people in the crowd, injuring a tourist and a security guard, the report said.
But he was shot and wounded by another guard who pulled an air gun, the website said, without elaborating on the victims’ condition.
The cook also claimed to have a bomb in his bag, but that proved to be a lie.
The 31-year-old attacker, whose name was withheld, worked on the Sergei Dyagilev cruise ship, but was fired over unspecified reasons after a single trip, Fontanka.ru said.
The man was not under influence, but appeared insane, which could get him out of the charges of hooliganism and inflicting grave bodily harm, the report said.
St. Petersburg accepts some 5 million tourists a year, according to city administration’s figures.
