Italian high jump Olympic medal contender Antonietta Di Martino will miss the Games with a knee injury, the Italian athletics federation said Friday.

Di Martino, 34, sustained the injury at a training camp in April after winning silver medal at the world indoor championships last month and had surgery in Rome on Wednesday.

The surgery was successful but she is expected to be sidelined for three to four months as she recovers, the Olympic media service said.

Di Martino was on the podium at the 2007 and 2011 world athletics championships and won the 2011 European indoor championships.

Her personal best of 2 meters 4 centimeters is the Italian record.
