Fifteen-year-old Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte took a surprise Olympic gold medal in the 100 meters breaststroke on Monday.

Meilutyte, competing in her first senior final, won in 1 minute, 5.47 seconds ahead of America's Rebecca Soni, who clocked 1:05.55.

"I can't believe it. It's too much for me," said Meilutyte, who qualified for the final in the fastest time.

"I really can't say anything. It was hard and difficult. At the moment I can't speak too much. But it means a lot to me and I'm so proud," added Meilutyte, who is based in the southern British coastal city of Plymouth.

It was Lithuania's first medal of the Games.

Soni, who won the 200 meters breaststroke gold in Beijing, was philosophical.

"It felt good. I'm a little disappointed. It was pretty fast. I've learned something now along the way."

Satomi Suzuki of Japan took the bronze in 1:06.93.
