South Africa's Chad Le Clos pipped America's Michael Phelps to gold in the men's 200 meters butterfly on Tuesday.
Le Clos overtook Phelps in the home straight to win in 1 minute, 52.96 seconds.
Phelps, a fourteen-time gold medalist, was five hundredths of a second down, but with silver equaled the 18-medal record haul of Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina.
Phelps took silver in the 4x100m relay on Monday.
Japan's Takeshi Matsuda grabbed the bronze in 1:53.21.
