The experience of special forces in the Middle East will be used in the training of intelligence personnel for Russia’s Airborne Troops, the troops’ commander, Col. Gen. Vladimir Shamanov, said on Thursday.
“As the events in Libya, and - another bright example today, Syria - show, special forces… are coming to the foreground in battlefield engagement,” Shamanov said live on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
“Being guided by that experience, today we are actively moving it into combat intelligence,” he said.
Russia and other former Soviet republics celebrate Airborne Troops Day on August 2 in memory of the first airdrop in 1930.
British special forces were used in Libya in 2011 to help Libyan rebels take control of the capital Tripoli.
