India's Saina Nehwal won women's singles bronze in badminton on Saturday when her opponent Wang Xin broke down with a knee injury after taking the opening game.
Nehwal, ranked fifth in the world, becomes only the second Indian woman to medal in an individual Olympic sport.
"It's a dream. I wanted gold but I am happy. At the next Olympics I will do better," she vowed.
"It's much easier for the players like the Chinese as they have a lot of other players in the country to play against and they know each other's games. I have to worry each round. It's tougher for me because I'm a single player."
Wang, a former world No. 1 and current No. 2, hurt her knee when stretching for a crosscourt drop shot on her third game point.
She had it taped up and when back on court to smash a winner and take the first game, but collapsed on the second point of the second game, and promptly conceded.
The score was 21-18, 1-0.
"I gave a short serve and I couldn't move a lot. And then I just came down," Wang said. "After they bandaged me up (at 20-18) I wanted to finish the first game. You can see that I didn't even jump when I returned the last shot."
Wang's compatriot Li Xuerui went on to win the gold medal in the final against No. 1 Wang Yihan.
Earlier in the day, Russia won its first ever badminton medal when Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova crushed Canada's Alex Bruce and Li Michele to take bronze in the women's doubles.
The competition was weakened considerably with the disqualification of four pairs, including China's No. 1 seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang, for match fixing.
