Ezekiel Kemboi of Kenya won Olympic gold in the 3,000 meters steeplechase on Sunday after defending champion Brimin Kiprop Kipruto tripped up in the penultimate back straight.
Kemboi, 30, a former world champion, stormed home in eight minutes, 18.56 seconds.
"I would like to thank the British people. It felt super to win the only gold medal for my country here in London," said Kemboi.
"In Beijing I was sick so I did not win. I'm so happy to have won here."
Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad, the Beijing silver medalist, clocked 8:19.08, with another Kenyan, Abel Kiprop Mutai, taking bronze in 8:19.73.
