Germany's double world champion Robert Harting hurled his way to Olympic gold in the men's discus on Tuesday, with Ehsan Hadadi of Iran taking the silver.
Bronze went to Estonia's defending champion Gerd Kanter.
Harting, unbeaten in the last two years, threw 68.27 meters, two meters short of his world-leading mark this year.
Hadadi got close, posting 68.18, with Beijing winner Kanter managing 68.03.
"It's just amazing. I can't believe it," Harting said. "It was so hard as my beginning was bad. It got better and in the end I was lucky."
"I've dreamed of this since I was 12 years old," he added.
Hadidi claimed he would have smashed the world record had he had the kind of training facilities available to Harting.
"It shouldn't be silver, it should be gold," he said.
'I respect him [Harting] and I'm happy for him, but, if I had his equipment, I could throw 85 meters, not 65 meters."
Kanter, meanwhile, was expecting more.
"I'm in great shape, you know. My second throw was the best but it was just a bit too high."
