Iran will host an international meeting on Syria to discuss ways of ending the months-long crisis in the Arab nation, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Wednesday.
“Our main goal is to end violence and promote national dialogue in Syria, and Iran is doing its best to end violence in Syria as soon as possible,” he was quoted by Press TV as saying.
Salehi said about a dozen Asian, African and Latin American states will take part in the meeting, scheduled to be held on Thursday.
The Syrian conflict has claimed between 14,000 and 20,000 lives since March 2011, according to estimates by various opposition groups and the UN. The West is pushing for Assad’s ouster, while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in the country, claiming the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
