America's Allyson Felix won Olympic gold in the 200 meters sprint on Wednesday.

Felix, the Beijing silver medalist, clocked 21.88 for gold, holding off 100 meters champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica by two tenths of a second.

Carmelita Jeter of the United States, the 100 meters silver medalist, held on for bronze in 22.14.

"It's been a long time coming, I am so overjoyed, my boyfriend and family, everyone was here. I am so thankful to God for an amazing opportunity," said Felix.

"It's just awesome, I've wanted it for so long. This moment is really priceless."

Fraser-Pryce said she hadn't expected to medal in a second event after the 100 meters.

"Oh my God, I am so grateful. To come here and get a silver, they are all such fast ladies - it's a blessing."

Double Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, also of Jamaica, failed in her attempt to become the first female track athlete to retain her title twice, finishing fourth.
